1 Executive summary

Bottom line: a tour-like 9-iron flight. 117 yds total, 116 carry, 92.2 mph ball speed, within 1 mph of the LPGA Tour average. The 26-yd apex and 47° landing match the LPGA averages exactly, and it curved only 6 ft.

The swing is solid: smooth ~2:1 tempo, hips holding their depth, a held, balanced finish. The constant from his other irons is here too: the head drops about 6 inches by impact, which matches the extra launch (27° vs 23.9° LPGA).

Strength

Tour-like flight

Apex, landing angle and ball speed sit on the LPGA averages; soft landing, 1 yd of roll.

Priority 1

Stay tall

Keep the cap on its address line. The dip starts in the first 0.25 s of the backswing.

Priority 2

Hands ahead

Hands over the lead thigh at impact to bring launch toward 23–24° and add carry.

★ first 9-iron report, so these set the baseline. Club speed isn't on the screen: at a typical iron smash of ~1.38–1.40, 92.2 mph of ball speed means about 66–67 mph. Curve direction read from the brighter arrow (reflections on the panel).

What it means: ball speed is LPGA-level and the peak height is already tour height. The extra ~3° of launch makes the ball climb and land soft (116 carry, 117 total). Bringing launch to ~24° with the same speed should add 3–5 yds of carry, right to the LPGA 119.

3 Timing & tempo — measured from the video

30 frames per second, so each time is accurate to about ±0.03 s. Takeaway starts at 32.70 s, the club reaches the top at ~33.20 s, and impact is at ~33.45 s.

GroupBackswingDownswingRatio
André (9-iron #1, Oct 28)~0.50 s~0.25 s~2:1
André (7-iron, Oct 14)~0.47 s~0.23 s~2:1
André (6-iron #4, Nov 2)~0.50 s~0.22 s~2.3:1
PGA Tour (Tour Tempo, "24/8")~0.80 s~0.27 s3:1

Tour figure: John Novosel, Tour Tempo. The hands peak at ~33.17 s while the club keeps loading one more frame.

What it means: the same rhythm as his 7-iron, smooth with no hesitation at the top. For a scoring club, a slightly fuller backswing (~0.6 s) would bring the ratio toward 2.5:1 and add control.

4 The reference frame — how this swing was measured

Reference frame
  • Grid: each square is about 5 inches (~16 px per inch at the golfer), scaled from his hip-to-ankle length, so treat distances as ±1–2 inches.
  • Vertical center line (light green): the head's address position. Horizontal lines: head height (white) and hip height (light green) at address.
  • Two corner diagonals (green): a fixed perspective scaffold for depth.
  • Paths: the red trail is the head and the yellow trail is the hands, frame by frame from address to impact. The red circle is the ball's address spot (the ball is already in the air in this frame).
  • Body points were tracked automatically on every frame (75 frames, 31.5–34.0 s), then checked by eye at each key position. The camera is fixed.

6 Position-by-position biomechanics

Club: 9-Iron, as named by André. Logged as report #1.

Photo 1 — Address Good

  • Athletic posture, weight centered, hands just ahead of the clubhead.
  • Ball in a normal 9-iron spot, about center, with alignment sticks on the mat for aim and ball position.

Photo 2 — Takeaway Good

  • A connected start: hands, arms and chest move away together.
  • The head has already started to sink (~2 in) as he loads.

Photo 3 — Lead arm parallel Watch

  • Lead arm parallel at ~0.27 s, wide and extended.
  • The head is now ~5 in lower and ~3 in toward the ball: the dip happens early, as in his 6-iron.

Photo 4 — Top Good

  • Full shoulder turn, club past vertical at the top (~0.50 s backswing).
  • Hips keep their depth: no slide toward the ball.

Photo 5 — Arm parallel (down) Good

  • Hands drop in front of the chest; the lower body leads the downswing.
  • Smooth transition, no hesitation at the top.

Photo 6 — Impact Head down

  • Clubhead at the ball at ~33.45 s; in the next frame the ball is already airborne.
  • The head is ~6 in lower and ~4 in closer to the ball than at address.
  • Hips hold their depth (no early extension).
  • Hands back at their address height, shaft close to vertical.

Photo 7 — Ball launched Good

  • The ball leaves on a high line (27° launch on the screen).
  • Airborne within 1/30 s of contact: a clean, centered strike.

Photo 8 — Release Good

  • Arms extend toward the target, chest keeps rotating.
  • The head starts to rise only after the ball is gone.

Photo 9 — Finish Excellent

  • Full, balanced finish, belt buckle to the target, trail toe on the ground.
  • Held for about 3 seconds while he watches the ball: the sequence held together.

8-Ironno report yet (expected ~130 yds)
9-Iron #1 (today)116 yds117 yds92.2 mph27°

The 9-iron opens a clean ~28-yd gap under the 7-iron, about 14 yds per club, which is healthy gapping. An 8-iron report would confirm the middle step.

8 Diagnosis

  1. Head dip (~6 in): it starts in the first 0.25 s of the backswing and never comes back up before impact. It adds loft and explains the 27° launch.
  2. Hips hold depth: no early extension, the same strength seen in his recent 6-irons.
  3. Tempo ~2:1: smooth and repeatable, the same rhythm as his 7-iron.
  4. Contact: clean and centered; the flight numbers confirm it.

9 Next steps — keep it simple

1

Cap on the line

At address, note where the cap sits against the background. Keep it there until the ball is gone. 10 slow swings, then full speed.

2

Hands ahead

Feel the hands over the lead thigh at impact. Target: 23–25° launch with the same speed.

3

5-ball average

Hit 5 balls and note the carries. Keep the 47° landing; an average anchors the 9-iron in the gapping table.

10 Limitations & next capture

Confidence: high on ball flight (range screen) and tempo (frame by frame), moderate on head and hip distances.
